The International Cultural Exchange Association Rhine-Ruhr joins hands with multiple partners to build a vibrant cross-cultural celebration, allowing Chinese culture to shine brilliantly on the global stage.

The Duisburg Fun Dragon Boat Race came to a triumphant close.

2025 June 15th

From 13 to 15 June 2025, the world’s largest dragon-boat spectacle—the Duisburg Inner Harbour Fun Dragon-Boat Race—drew its triumphant curtain amid waves of jubilation. Certified by Guinness World Records as the “largest dragon-boat event on Earth,” this year’s regatta saw roughly 3,000 paddlers battling it out on the water, while packed grandstands and riverbanks erupted in non-stop cheers. Far more than a fierce competition, the festival served as a vibrant platform for Chinese-German cultural exchange, radiating the spirit of friendship and unity.

Rooted in the principle of “honoring tradition while embracing innovation, crossing boundaries to create unity,” this edition of the event delivered a suite of immersive cultural experiences:

• Hanfu Aesthetic Showcase – A living runway of dynastic attire that animates millennia of Chinese sartorial heritage and aesthetic philosophy.
• Dragon Culture Narrative – A globally accessible storytelling session that decodes the cultural symbolism and historical lineage of the Chinese dragon.
• Origins of the Dragon-Boat Festival – A multimedia deep-dive into the festival’s cultural DNA and historical layers.
• Cross-Cultural Youth Dialogue – German and Chinese children reciting classical poems and sharing folk tales together, planting seeds of lifelong friendship.
• Digital Odyssey of Eastern Mythology – Powered by the interactive installation from the “Yuyuan Classic of Mountains and Seas Lantern Fair,” visitors scan a code to step into a VR realm where mythical beasts roam amid light and shadow, experiencing the seamless fusion of Eastern mythology and cutting-edge technology.

A standout moment came when Jiang Ran, host from Voice of the Yangtze River Delta, guided young participants in reciting classical Chinese poetry, revealing the universal appeal of these timeless verses. The “Star Explorers” embodied cultural confidence on the spot—teaching guests to write Chinese characters and sing Chinese songs—sparking cross-cultural resonance and vividly demonstrating the contemporary vitality and broad magnetism of Chinese culture.

During the event, Deputy Consul General Wu Chenqi of the Chinese Consulate-General in Düsseldorf and Mr. Grünhage, representing the organizers, praised the cultural exchange spectacle. A special highlight came when the Yangtze Finless Porpoise Team—formed by the Consulate-General and representatives of Chinese enterprises—invited Chairwoman Chen Lini to race with them on the water. This moment was both a resounding endorsement of the association’s work and a vivid testament to people-to-people diplomacy between China and Germany.

The International Cultural Exchange Association Rhine-Ruhr e.V. is honored to have forged a strategic partnership with Voice of the Yangtze River Delta. Together, we created a vibrant showcase for Chinese culture on this world-class stage. Over three intensive days, we built a multidimensional, immersive cultural-communication matrix that seamlessly wove the essence of Chinese civilization into the exuberant spirit of the dragon-boat races.

The resounding success of this event would not have been possible without the unwavering support and professional dedication of every partner. The International Cultural Exchange Association Rhine-Ruhr e.V. salutes all participants with the highest respect.

Looking ahead, we will continue to join hands with colleagues from every sector to deepen our cross-cultural cooperation mechanisms and innovate models of cultural communication. Together we will forge an even stronger people-to-people bond between China and Germany, contributing greater strength to the friendship and exchange between our two nations.
